As winter begins to rear its sleepy head and bring with it a frightful chill, we need to work harder than usual to counteract the beauty problems that arise as the mercury drops. Cold and dry air, heating and cool winds wreak havoc on your hair, skin and nails. If you don’t think you look your best, you’re not going to feel your best.
Our solution to banishing the winter blah is to adopt a new beauty routine that is sure to put the bounce back in you AND your skin!
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!
As the temperature outside begins to drop, you can almost hear your skin screaming out for some serious TLC. The key is to lather your skin in a heavier, oil-based moisturiser rather than your usual summer go-to, which is likely to be water-based. The thicker, greasier formula packs a real punch to parched skin and will rekindle it with some of that lost elasticity. Look out for natural moisturisers including all time favourites; olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, avocado oil, sweet almond oil and Vitamin E oil. Taking a gentle exfoliator to your skin prior to moisturizing will further brighten your skin and accelerate the effects of the moisturiser. Bonus points if you choose a moisturiser containing SPF!!
Quench the thirst
Flyways, frizz and split ends are the undeniable perils of winter. Just as your skin needs a good drink during the cooler months, so too does your hair. Tame those golden locks by taking the vitamin E-laden coconut oil out for a spin. Apply lightly melted oil to each strand of hair, including the scalp. Gently massage and leave for a few minutes to sit before rinsing thoroughly. You can thank me later.
As an extra super duper bonus tip, don’t be tempted to turn up the hot water in your shower during the cooler months. The hot water will dehydrate your skin & hair and strip your body of its natural protective oils.
Keep those pointers pretty
In winter, your digits can also suffer from cold air and loss of moisture. Keep your pointers pretty by covering them up where possible. That means donning cute gloves to ward off the winter chill or protecting your hands when you’re getting down and dirty with the household chores. Apply a rejuven
ating polish to tired nails for a super luxe pick-me-up and top it off with a deeply hydrating hand balm for an in-house pamper session.
You are what you eat!
Finally, there’s no point revving up your winter skin and beauty routine if you don’t start by nourishing yourself from within. Try upping you Vitamin E and Omega-3 fatty acid intake through eating plenty of fish, nuts, legumes and of course, the ol’ favourite, leafy greens. Alternatively, seek out a natural supplement to help boost skin moisture and improve elasticity.
Happy Winter!!
