An edgy staple for several winters now, the popularity of leather leggings and trousers shows no sign of abating as more and more denim addicts discover the comfort and warmth of jeans’ luxe relative.
Pick a timeless, flattering cut and you’ll have them to enjoy for many more cool days and glam nights than your usual denim or knit leggings.
Even better, the democratisation of the trend means it’s easier than ever to afford the look if your budget doesn’t meet designer price points. And for those not yet willing to commit to a full-leather look there are plenty of non-animal options or pieces featuring leather and leather-look trims.
Leather leggings 101
The original style and by now an iconic fashion item (not to mention Kardashian favourite!), leather leggings may seem intimidating and constricting option – especially if you know the gut-busting pain of high-waisted leather skirts and trousers (and trying to get those press studs done up!).
Rest assured, a well-cut pair are more comfy and accommodating than you’d think. Make sure you follow the skinny jeans rule when buying and, if in doubt, choose the smaller size as they’ll ‘give’ after some wearing.
Sports luxe with leather
We’ve seen baggier options in seasons past with harem-style (‘drop crotch’) trousers getting the leather treatment. This winter, it’s the humble sweatpant: think elasticised draw-string waists, roomie legs, and tapered or cuffed ankles… Trackie dacks never looked or felt so good!
Animal-friendly options
Call it pleather, leather-look or our new favourite, ‘vegan-friendly’, the big plus of a synthetic fabric is that it can be machine- or hand-washed rather than reserving for the dry cleaner, not to mention a cheaper price tag than real animal skin.
Synthetic leather needn’t mean being short-changed in the style stakes – just look at the success of PETA supporter Stella McCartney’s designs over the past two decades.
Caring for your second skin
Leather should be dry-cleaned only, and hunt around for a specialist leather cleaner – given your investment, it’s worth the work to look after them properly!
