How to apply eyeliner to make your eyes pop can be a difficult skill to master! They say “the eyes are the windows to the soul.” If that’s the case, you want people to see your windows as beautiful, right?
You want them to believe that your soul is a magnificent and wonderful part of you. Even if your eyes are not your greatest feature, you can enhance their beauty by creating an eyeliner makeup lookthat brings out their gorgeous flecks of colour.
There are different types of eyeliner and other eye makeup products that you can use to make your eyes stand out. The key is to create your look based around your own features. For example, if you have dark coloured eyes, you want to apply eyeliner in a contrasting, lighter colour. Likewise, for light coloured eyes, choose a darker shade for eye makeup to really make your eyes pop. You don’t have to be afraid of colour when it comes to eyeliner. For certain occasions, like parties or festive celebrations, creating fun looks like a blue eyeliner look is completely acceptable. The key is not to overdo it. For events like these, you don’t need to be concerned with appropriate colours, since you are going for a fun look, not an everyday look.
Here are some general guidelines for applying a colourful eyeliner:
- For more casual occasions, only apply eyeliner a thin line to the upper lid, just above the lash line (if you use a standard eyeliner, then blend with an eyeliner brush)
- For fancier events, you can use a liquid liner on top and bottom to create a cat eye
- For a more subtle look, substitute blue eye shadow and apply eyeliner to upper and lower lash line with an eye shadow brush
Save the more dramatic looks for occasions that call for heavier makeup. A day at the office or Sunday morning church service is not the time or place for dramatic makeup.
As for eyeliner looks for every day, the same general guidelines (mostly) apply. This is when creating a look based around your features is most important. You want your look to be natural but still enhance your eyes. The best way to do that is to select products in colours that are the opposite of your natural eye colour. So if your eyes are blue or green, you want to choose a brown eyeliner. If your eyes are brown, go with a colourful liner like blue, green or purple. You individual colouring will also play a part, so keep that in mind.

Once you’ve figured out which colours and products complement your eyes the best, there a few different techniques for applying your eyeliner. Since you’re creating a look for everyday wear, you don’t want it to be too dramatic. You can always add to your look later if you plan to keep it for a night out. All you need to do is intensify the makeup you’re already wearing, making it heavier for nighttime.
But when it comes to daytime makeup, here’s what to keep in mind:
- Liquid eyeliner is more intense, so use it in moderation (thinner lines on top and bottom, or top lash line only)
- Smudge eyeliner with an eyeliner brush to make it look more natural
- Eye shadow can also be used to create a more natural look, but keep it thin so it doesn’t overpower (this goes for both powder and gel shadow)
It’s usually fine to add a bit of drama to your everyday eye makeup by getting creative with your look. For example, a subtle cat eye, or a gradual thickening across the lid (going outwards) is a great way to change up your look without it being too extreme. Again, you can always create a stronger look for nighttime by exaggerating your eye makeup.
Whether you’re just running errands, or you have a day full of work, your eyes will speak to every person you encounter. And if you want them to look into your eyes and see how beautiful you are, you can show them by creating a fabulous eyeliner look. All you need is a couple of products to make your “windows” stand out.
